Unterwasser is a village in the municipality of Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland . Until 2009 Unterwasser belonged to the municipality of Alt St. Johann .
The place is known for mountain and winter sports. In 1934, the funicular to the Iltios was built as the first mountain railway in Toggenburg. Today the railway is part of the Unterwasser / Alt St. Johann ski area .

The second highest village in Toggenburg is located in the valley of Alt St. Johann at the confluence of the Säntis and Wildhuser thur rivers, embedded between the Alpstein and the seven Churfirsten at an altitude of 910 m above sea level. M.
history
In the Middle Ages Unterwasser was under the rule of the Counts of Montfort . In the 13th century, possessions were donated by the nobles of Ganterschwil to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Johann . In the 15th century the place was mentioned in a document as Under the water . In 1555 Unterwasser was incorporated into the St. Gallen Abbey . When the Schwendi school was closed and merged with the Nesselhalden school, the Unterwasser school district was created in 1835.
On a modest scale, underwater silk weaving was carried out, from 1840 satin stitch weaving and from 1874 machine embroidery. After 1860, Unterwasser developed into a whey and climatic health resort, after the construction of the Unterwasser – Iltios funicular in 1934, it also became a winter health resort.

Economy and Transport
The most important branches of industry are tourism, agriculture, hospitality and small businesses. Unterwasser is served every half hour by the Postbus line between Nesslau- Neu St. Johann and Buchs SG .
The cable car Unterwasser – Iltios , called Iltiosbahn, takes passengers up to the Iltios (1350 m above sea level). From there, a cable car leads to the Chäserrugg (2262 m above sea level), the first of the seven Churfirsten. Together with those of Wildhaus SG and Alt St. Johann, the lifts operate the Obertoggenburg ski area , which has been separated into the Unterwasser / Alt St. Johnn and Wildhaus areas since 2019.
