The funicular railway Unterwasser – Iltios (DUI), called Iltiosbahn, is a funicular railway in Unterwasser in Obertoggenburg in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .

Until 2008 it belonged to the "Bergbahnen Unterwasser-Iltios-Chäserrugg AG" (BUIC AG), today to the "Toggenburg Bergbahnen AG", which was created through the merger of the Alt St. Johann and Unterwasser mountain railways.

Route

The 1,195 meter long run begins at 911 m above sea level. M. below the early meadow in Unterwasser. The threshold height in the Iltios mountain station is 1339 m above sea level. From there, the Iltios – Chäserrugg cable car leads up to the 2262 meter high Chäserrugg , the first of the Churfirsten , and ski lifts etc. a. to the Stöfeli. The railway was opened in 1934 and rebuilt in summer 2005. The original track width was widened from 800 millimeters to 1000 millimeters. The BUIC intends to purchase a new drive and new cars by 2012, which will significantly increase capacity. The Iltiosbahn is frequented mainly by mountain and winter sports enthusiasts and is part of the Obertoggenburg ski area , which includes the slopes of Wildhaus , Unterwasser and Alt St. Johann .

In the 2005/2006 season, the railway made a total of 21,560 journeys on 284 days and carried 351,849 passengers.

The Iltiosbahn has two cars for 100 people each. The capacity is 850 people per hour and direction.
