The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) is a new tram system that connects the communities of Bayonne , Jersey City , Hoboken , Weehawken , Union City and North Bergen , all of which are located in the US state of New Jersey . HBLR is owned by New Jersey Transit and operated by the 21st Century Rail Corporation. After complete completion, the total length of the route network should be 33.2 kilometers (20.6 miles ).

In order to cope with the increasing volume of traffic in the densely populated area on the banks of the Hudson River opposite Manhattan , alternatives to passenger transport by car were planned as early as the 1980s and early 1990s . In 1996, the State of New Jersey awarded the 21st Century Rail Corporation the contract to develop, build and operate a streetcar system. On April 15, 2000, the first route was opened to the public. Meanwhile, an average of 45,000 passengers use the HBLR every day, which operates on the following three routes:

  • West Side Avenue (Jersey City) - Tonnelle Avenue (North Bergen)
  • Hoboken Terminal - Tonnelle Avenue (North Bergen)
  • 22nd Street (Bayonne) - Hoboken Terminal

With probable total cost of about 2.2 billion US dollars , the HBLR is one of the largest public works projects in the state of New Jersey. Funding is provided by both the federal government and the state of New Jersey.

In July 2014 NJ Transit decided to convert 35 three-piece train sets into five-piece sets. As a result, the vehicles offer around 50 percent more capacity. A train set converted as a prototype has already been on the network for test purposes since July 2013.
