history

A MetroLink train crosses Eads Bridge from St. Louis, MO to East St. Louis, IL

In 1990 construction began on the first line between North Hanley and 5th & Missouri Station in East St. Louis , Illinois. On July 31, 1993, the route was handed over to its destination. In 1994, North Hanley was expanded to the west to Lambert Airport . In the same year, the East Riverfront station in East St. Louis was inaugurated. Four years later, another stop was added with the Lambert Airport East station. Much of the cost came from federal funds from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

MetroLink exceeded expectations in terms of the number of users, but the railway grew very slowly. The construction of planned extensions was delayed due to insufficient funds from the FTA. An increasing part of the costs was contributed from local and regional sources. Currently, most of the operating costs are financed from regional funds.

In 1998 construction began on the extension to Belleville in St. Clair County, Illinois, and was completed in 2001. This section added eight new stations and seven park-and-ride spaces.

In May 2003 the route was extended by the 5.6 km long section from Bellville to Scott Airbase near Shiloh. Most of the costs were paid for by the Illinois State Fund for Infrastructure, Roads, Schools, and Transit ( FIRST ). A smaller portion was borne by the St. Clair County Transit District .

On August 26, 2006, a second line was inaugurated with the route via Brentwood to Shrewsbury . The free park-and-ride course in Brentwood with a capacity of 1000 cars was completed on June 12, 2007.

On October 27, 2008, the name of the lines, which is still valid today, was introduced. The line to the airport became the Red Line , the trains running today from Shrewsbury , MO to Fairview Heights , IL to the Blue Line and signposted according to the color scheme.
