Dürpfest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dürpelfest always takes place in May on Düsseldorfer Straße in Ohligs-Mitte.

The Dürpelfest in Solingen's Ohligs district has been the largest annual folk festival in the Bergisch city triangle (Wuppertal, Remscheid, Solingen) since 1975 .

history

From street festival to open-air event

In 1974, many locations in Solingen celebrated the founding of the city of Solingen in 1374. The Solingen municipal administration organized anniversary celebrations for the 600th anniversary of the city of blades in many places in the city . These celebrations were perceived as very negative in the citizens of Ohligs , the majority of the citizens in the Ohligs district felt that they were massively underrepresented in the anniversary celebrations of the city of Solingen.

The Ohligs' disappointment about the small part of their district in the 600-year celebration was so great that the Ohligs retailers Hans Ketzberg ( Radio Ketzberg), Jochen Güttes ( Güttes department store ) and Karl-Heinz Schälte ( fish trade Schälte ) spent a year later, a street festival specially organized for the residents in Ohligs-Mitte. The only possible event location was the then newly renovated Düsseldorfer Strasse, which was converted into a pedestrian zone in 1975 . The three Ohligs retailers (Ketzberg, Güttes and Schälte) were members of the Ohligser Advertising and Interest Group (OWG) and have since been considered the inventors of the Ohligser Dürpelfest.

The first Dürpelfest in 1975

The name Dürpelfest was only invented in the spring of 1975. In 1974 the Solingen city administration did not have a special name for the few celebrations in the Ohligs district.

The namesake of the Dürpelfest was the long-time chairman of the OWG Hans Ketzberg (1939–2020). In the Solingen dialect, the steps to the entrance door and / or the sidewalk on a street are called Dürpel . With the name Dürpel, Hans Ketzberg wanted to emphasize the neighborhood character in the Ohligs district. The first street festival under the then new name Dürpelfest took place on May 24th and 25th, 1975 in Ohligs. Today the OWG organizes the Dürpelfest on its own, bears overall responsibility and has the right to place .

Over 100,000 visitors

The Dürpelfest, in Solingen popularly also briefly Dürpel called, is far beyond the borders of the city of blades known and also has the small Ohligser street festival (1975) for the most open-air event developed in the Bergisch city triangle. Every year over 100,000 people visit the Dürpelfest in Ohligs-Mitte on three days.

"It's unbelievable how many thousands of people visit little Ohligs at once."

- Gloria Göllmann, Dürpelfest project manager of the Ohligser advertising and interest group

As a visitor to the Dürpelfest, you have the choice between 40 different stands ( beer and snack stands ) to dance and listen to live music. The majority of the stands are run by voluntary associations from the Ohligs district, a small number of the stands are operated commercially by external showmen. The total annual costs consisting of: security concept , music program, electricity / water supply, security , sanitary facilities and waste disposal amount to at least 60,000 euros according to the OWG. The Dürpelfest is financed from stand rental, sponsoring , voluntary donations and the sale of Ohligs souvenirs .
