Dudley S. Gregory
Dudley Sanford Gregory (born February 5, 1800 in Redding , Connecticut , † December 8, 1874 in Jersey City , New Jersey ) was an American politician and member of the House of Representatives of the United States .
Gregory was born in Redding, a town in Fairfield County , in 1800 . In 1805 he and his father moved to Albany , New York . In 1824, Gregory was a member of the Guard of Honor that General La Fayette received in New York when he visited the United States. In the same year Gregory moved to New York City . He lived there for ten years before moving to Jersey City in 1834 .
In 1838, Gregory was elected Jersey City's first mayor. He held this office three times, from 1838 to 1840, from 1841 to 1842 and from 1858 to 1860. Between his second and third terms, Gregory represented the state of New Jersey from March 4, 1847 to March 3, 1849 as a member of the House of Representatives United States. Gregory was a member of the Whig Party .
