Margaret Scafati "Marge" Roukema (born September 19, 1929 in Newark , New Jersey , † November 12, 2014 in Wyckhoff , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 2003 she represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Marge Roukema attended West Orange High School until 1947 and then Montclair State College until 1953 . After that she worked as a teacher. From 1970 to 1973 she was the vice president of the Ridgewood City Education Committee . In 1975 she studied at Rutgers College in New Brunswick .

Politically, Roukema joined the Republican Party . In the 1980 congressional elections , she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of New Jersey , where she succeeded her previously defeated Democrat Andrew Maguire on January 3, 1981 . After ten re-elections, she was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2003 . Since 1983, she has represented the fifth district of her state as the successor to Millicent Fenwick . In Congress, she was considered a moderate Republican. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 took place during her time in the US House of Representatives . In 2002 she decided not to run again. He was succeeded by the much more conservative Scott Garrett , who was previously inferior to her twice in the Republican primary .

Marge Roukema died on November 12, 2014 at the age of 85 in a Wyckhoff, New Jersey hospital, of complications from Alzheimer's disease .
