Rudolf Sutermeister (* May 7, 1802 in Wynigen ; † May 9, 1868 in Zofingen ; resident in Zofingen) was a Swiss practicing doctor for the poor or social medicine , entrepreneur or manufacturer, early socialist and "socio-political writer". Together with Gustav Siegfried , even before Johann Jakob Treichler and Karl Bürkli , he is the first autochthonous German-Swiss socialist. Unlike Siegfried, however, he was considered a utopian .

Life

Rudolf Sutermeister was a pastor's son and came from an "old Zofingen councilor family". He received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Basel and / or trained as a doctor in Bern and from 1824 ran a practice in Zofingen. He was a doctor for the poor and himself lived “in financial distress”. Among other things, Sutermeister is “economically and mentally to be regarded as proletarian ”.

Encouraged by Charles Fourier and friends with Wilhelm Weitling , Sutermeister saw "in the 1840s all salvation for his fatherland in a communist transformation of society"; he was also friends with Gustav Siegfried . In 1837 he turned "for the first time with a social reform manifesto to the public". He forged “plans for socialist experiments with a Saint-Simonist character”. With August Becker and Johannes Glur he formed “a 'liberal-communist' circle”.

His subsequent years were characterized by litigation, among other things, and he fell into oblivion.
