Rudolf Smoking Stone

Rudolf Rauchstein (born May 2, 1798 in Brugg , † January 3, 1879 in Aarau ) was a Swiss philologist , educator , editor and politician .

biography

Rudolf Rauchstein was born the son of a cutler in Brugg. After attending the Latin School in Brugg and the Academy in Bern (the predecessor institution of the University of Bern ), he studied Classical Philology in Breslau . In 1820 he first became a teacher in Hofwil at the school led by Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg . From 1822 he worked for 44 years as a professor of Latin and Greek at the Aarau Cantonal School . His students were u. a. Augustin Keller , Emil Welti and Hans Herzog .

He was rector for a total of 23 years . A gifted, respected in Switzerland and Germany Greek scholar , he studied in numerous publications, especially with Pindar , the tragedians and the Attic orators. Smoke stone was part-time in 1828 as an employee from 1832 as editor of the Aargauer Zeitung active

From 1831 to 1841, smoking stone was a passionate, liberal-conservative member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau . Despite his sympathy for the Catholic part of the population, Rauchstein voted for the abolition of the monastery in 1841 . Rauchstein received the title of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Basel in 1843 for his scientific merits .

Smoking stone died of a stroke on January 3, 1879 .

A gifted, respected in Switzerland and Germany Hellenist , published mainly works on the Athenian orators to Pindar and the Greek tragedies . Other works deal with teaching (especially the classical languages) at grammar schools.
