In 1932 the “Aargau Historical Society” entrusted the young historian with the inventory of the Brugg and Rheinfelden city archives and the editing of the volume with the documents from the Brugg city archives in the “ Aargauer Urkunden” series . This was followed by three more volumes with documents from the Aarau archives (City of Aarau, Zofingen Abbey , City and Office of Aarburg). Working on the document holdings paved the way for Boner to join the archive service in 1938 as an assistant, and later as an adjunct in the Aargau State Archives under Hector Ammann . From 1947 he also held this office under the state archivist Nold Halder . In 1967 he was elected full-time state archivist. In 1974 he resigned.

From 1959 to 1968 Boner also headed the secretariat of the Association of Swiss Archivists and for many years was Vice President of the “Historical Society”. Boner published numerous works on the history of churches, monasteries and localities in Aargau.
