Hektor Ammann (born July 23, 1894 in Aarau ; † July 22, 1967 there ) was a Swiss historian and archivist .

life and work

He was the son of the architect Robert Ammann and studied history and geography in Zurich , Berlin and Geneva between 1914 and 1920 . At a young age he joined the FDP of the canton of Aargau . Since the time before the First World War, he had been ideologically influenced by Germanophilia , from 1916 he worked as secretary of the “German-Swiss Society” affiliated with the “ Volksbund für das Deutschtum Abroad ”. From 1919 onwards, Ammann increasingly appeared as an advocate of narrowly defined neutrality and was head of the office from 1923 to 1927, and later chairman of the “ People's League for the Independence of Switzerland ”. In addition to his political commitment, Ammann developed a wide range of scientific and journalistic activities and worked a. a. in the Swiss monthly magazine since 1922 . In 1929 he was elected as state archivist and cantonal librarian in Aargau . Since 1930 chairman of the «Aargau Historical Society», in 1932 he became editor of the journal for Swiss history . Even after 1933, Ammann stuck to the idea of ​​a supranational German people and culture community and in 1940 was one of the main initiators of the entry of the two hundred . With other members of the “Volksbund” he also took part in the talks with Klaus Hügel , SS Hauptsturmführer and SD employee in Stuttgart. This led to his dismissal from civil service in 1946.

From 1955 Ammann taught as an honorary professor for economic history at the University of Mannheim , and from 1958 to 1963 he held an extraordinary professorship at the University of Saarbrücken . From 1960 until his death he was director of the Institute for Regional Studies of the Saarland , from 1956 to 1967 Secretary of the Commission for Urban History of the International Association of Historians. During this time, Ammann consolidated his reputation as an internationally recognized economic historian.

Ammann was married to Margrit born in 1930. Hemmeler. The children Gerhard and Gertrud emerged from this marriage.
