Aargau Cantonal Library

The Aargauer Kantonsbibliothek in Aarau is a public library with an academic focus and a cantonal collection mandate . The canton library is the central point for information, information literacy and information transfer. She coordinates the Aargau library network and is actively involved in the development of the Aargau library system .

history

The founding of the Aargau Cantonal Library dates back to the early 19th century. Beat Fidel Zurlauben (1720–1799), who came from an influential Zug family, worked as a historian and mercenary leader in France. Zurlauben got into financial difficulties when the French court failed to make payments after the revolution. He was therefore forced to sell his collection to Germany. However, the Helvetian government prevented the delivery across the border and took over the library (over 8,000 volumes and 50,000 historical files) as the basis for the establishment of a national library . However, the Helvetic Republic disintegrated before these plans could be implemented, so that the holdings were transferred to the canton of Aargau , which was newly founded in 1803 . The Zurlaubiana thus forms the basic inventory of today's cantonal library. The Aargau canton library was finally opened in May 1807.

After the cloisters in Aargau were dissolved in 1841, important collections of medieval manuscripts and old prints , especially from the monasteries of Muri and Wettingen, also came to the cantonal library in 1843 . In the course of the 19th century, additional scholarly libraries were added to the inventory through purchase and gift.

When it opened in 1807, the cantonal library was intended as a "civil servants' library", i.e. a library for members of the government, the authorities, civil servants and the clergy. In 1875 it was understood as a specialist library , after 1890 as a study and educational library . Today it is considered a public scientific library .

In 2016, the cantonal library was merged with the Aargau State Archives and library funding across institutions under the umbrella brand “Library and Archive Aargau”. Aargau Library and Archive is a central memory institution and coordination point for the further development of the library and archive landscape in the Canton of Aargau.

The reorganization of the tasks of the Aargau library and archive also led to a reorganization of the institutions. The core tasks of the cantonal library, the state archive and the public libraries department are organized in joint departments under one management: department 1: collection and holdings, department 2: customer service and brokerage, department 3: coordination of library and archives and department 4: digital services.

Duration

The cantonal library provides access to around 750,000 media and electronic resources.

Historical collections

The medieval manuscripts include valuable and significant rarities and unique items: The Muri Easter Play (1250), the three sumptuously and magnificently illustrated volumes of the Wettinger Graduale and the three-volume Swiss illustrated chronicle by Abbot Christoph Silberysen (1542–1608), both from the monastery Wettingen . Some of the medieval manuscripts have been digitized and are freely accessible at e-codices.ch .

830 books in the canton library's collection were printed between 1450 and 1500. The rare edition of the "Melusina" by Thuringia von Ringoltingen and some hand-colored early woodcut books are particularly valuable. Among the books that were printed after 1500 are the very rare first edition of the "Lale Book", Johann Peschel's "Garden Order", a whole series of magnificently illustrated plant books and historical travel reports.

The canton library also has the following archives and legacies : the book archive of the Aargauer Verlag Sauerländer , the Wedekind archive , the Ernst Widmer estate, the Werner Wehrli estate and the Zurlauben collection as well as the private libraries of Heinrich Zschokke , Hansjakob Seiler , Karl Ballmer , Eugen Bircher and Walther Merz .
