Memory institution

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Memory institution (including memory organization ) is a collective term for institutions the knowledge preserve and convey. This includes in particular libraries , museums and archives .

The term was coined in the context of long-term archiving and making accessible, especially digital information. Despite great differences in place and organizational form as well as in the stored knowledge, the memory institutions face similar problems with regard to technology, financing and copyright . Also from the point of view of the users of digital offers of a memory institution, it is irrelevant where the retrieved information was originally located.

In 2008, the Federal Office of Culture in Switzerland saw the Federal Archives , the National Library and the State Museum among the federal memory institutions . The federal government could not regulate the handling of the digital challenge (“memo policy”) of this and other Swiss memory institutions at the federal level, but it had to take responsibility for enabling them to do so.
