Hugh James "Jim" Saxton (born January 22, 1943 in Nicholson , Wyoming County , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Between 1984 and 2009 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Saxton attended Lackawanna Trail High School in Factoryville until 1961 . This was followed by courses at East Stroudsburg State College and Temple University in Philadelphia , from which he graduated in 1968. In the following years Saxton worked as a teacher. He also began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1976 and 1981 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly ; from 1982 to 1984 he was a member of the New Jersey Senate .

After the death of Congressman Edwin B. Forsythe , Saxton was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , at the by-election due for the 13th seat of New Jersey , where he took up his new mandate on November 6, 1984. After twelve re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 2009 . Since 1993 he has represented the third district of his state there as the successor to Frank Pallone . During his membership in Congress, Saxton was intermittently a member of the Armed Forces Committee , the Natural Resources Committee and the Joint Economic Committee , of which he was chairman. He also served on three sub-committees. Saxton was considered a moderate Republican who was also committed to environmental issues. During his time as a member of parliament, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan occurred . In 2008, Saxton decided not to run again for congressional reasons for health reasons.
