Charles Skelton

Charles Skelton (born April 19, 1806 in Buckingham , Bucks County , Pennsylvania , †  May 20, 1879 in Trenton , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1855 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Skelton attended the public schools in his home country and the Trenton Academy . Around 1829 he moved to Trenton where he worked in commerce. In 1835 he moved to Philadelphia , where he studied medicine at Jefferson Medical College until 1838 . After his admission as a doctor, he began practicing this profession there. In 1841 he returned to Trenton. In 1848 he became a school councilor in that city. Politically, Skelton joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1850 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded William A. Newell on March 4, 1851 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1855 . These were determined by the events leading up to the civil war . The main issue was slavery .

In 1854 Skelton renounced another congressional candidacy. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked again as a doctor; between 1873 and 1875 he was a member of the Common Council . He died in Trenton on May 20, 1879.
