Anthony DeFino
Anthony M. DeFino (* 1936 ; † December 5, 1996 in North Bergen , New Jersey ) was the mayor of West New York in the US state of New Jersey from 1971 to 1995 .
After studying at the Seton Hall University School of Law defino worked as a prosecutor (County Prosecutor) of Hudson County . In 1971 incumbent West New York City Mayor John Armellino was convicted of corruption, and DeFino emerged victorious in the subsequent elections.
According to his colleague and later mayor Silverio Vega , DeFino was not only an impressive personality because of his stature (over 250 kg in weight and 183 cm tall). As mayor, he took care of the improvement of the municipal schools, had the town hall expanded and a public swimming pool built. In the late 1980s, the expensive expansion of wastewater disposal required by the Clean Water Act was the city government's priority.
In 1993 DeFino had to face a dismissal procedure initiated by Albio Sires . In a somewhat confused election, a clear majority of voters voted for DeFino's removal, but at the same time the citizens re-elected him and not the challenger Sires as the new mayor. DeFino stayed in office until the 1995 elections, which he did not run.
During DeFino's tenure, many Hispanic immigrants moved to West New York, and in the 1990 census they made up a clear majority of over 60%. The Italian-American DeFino faced this change by accepting Hispanics like the native Cuban Silverio Vega into the city government.
Antony DeFino died in the Palisades General Hospital in late 1996 at the age of 60. In 2009 he was inducted into the New Jersey State League of Municipalities Elected Officials Hall of Fame .
