Kyonemichthys rumengani is a very smallpipefish species that was only described in 2007 and was named after its discoverer Noldy Rumengan. The first description was based on a single, adult, female specimen of 26.8 mm total length, which wascaughtin the Lembeh Straits near Sulawesi (Indonesia). The new genus Kyonemichthys was establishedfor the species, the name of the genus should indicate the thread-like shape of the fish with their swollen trunk ( Gr .: "Kyo" = swollen, "nema" = thread, "ichthys" = fish).

features

Kyonemichthys rumengani is one of the smallest representatives of the pipefish. The outward appearance of the fish is similar to the dwarf needle horse with the genera Acentronura , Amphelicturus and Idiotropiscis , but has a shorter body with nine body rings (compared to 11–15) and a longer tail with 51 tail rings (compared to 37–46) . The dorsal fin sits further back and does not start until the eighth tail ring. Usually the dorsal fin base begins on the trunk, at the latest on the second tail ring. The head and muzzle are short, the head is bent by about 25 ° in relation to the body axis. The trunk is noticeably swollen and constricted in the middle. The tail has no caudal fin and can be used as a grasping organ, but apparently not as mobile as that of the dwarf needle horse.

Besides the dwarf needle horses, Kyonemichthys rumengani has some similarities with the pipefish genus Urocampus , which occurs on the coasts of Australia and Japan. These include the short muzzle, the dorsal fin standing far back, the small number of torso rings and the high number of tail rings.

Kyonemichthys rumengani lives over debris and over mud and silt soils.
