Reinhard Koehler

Reinhard Köhler (born August 10, 1951 in Dortmund ) is a German linguist . From 1990 to 2016 he was Professor of Linguistic Data Processing (Computational Linguistics) at the University of Trier .

Life

After finishing school with the Abitur at the Stadtgymnasium in Dortmund in 1970, Reinhard Köhler did his civilian alternative service and in the summer semester of 1972 began his studies at the Ruhr University Bochum in the subjects general linguistics, social sciences and Slavic studies ; further interests were in mathematics as well as the theory and practice of programming. During his studies he worked at the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Accident Research, as a high school teacher for mathematics, physics and chemistry at a private school and as a programmer at RWE in Essen.

In 1980 Köhler passed his master's degree at the Ruhr University in Bochum. 1980–1984 he was a research assistant in the department of linguistics and communication science at the University of Essen. In addition, from 1982 he worked as a software developer and systems analyst. From 1985 he was a research assistant at the Linguistic Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum; 1985 doctorate at the philological faculty. For his dissertation on linguistic synergetics: structure and dynamics of lexicons (published 1986) he received the 1986 Wilhelm Hollenberg Prize and the Prize of the Ruhr University Bochum. From the 1989/90 winter semester he was the professor for linguistic data processing at the University of Trier; from September 1990 to 2016 he held the professorship for linguistic data processing (computational linguistics) in Trier. He has since retired.

Focus of work

Reinhard Köhler's main research interests are in quantitative and system-theoretical linguistics; his teaching is mainly concerned with quantitative and systems theoretical linguistics, software engineering, philosophy of science and statistical methods in linguistics. The Linguistic Synergetics owes him her foundation and preparation; it captures language with a system of interconnected language laws which, as a long-term goal, aim at a newly founded language theory .

In addition to his research work, Reinhard Köhler is an essential driver of the international organization of quantitative linguistics: he is the president of the International Quantitative Linguistics Association (IQLA) and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Quantitative Linguistics .
