The Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor is an office within the United States Department of State .

Due to the growing interest of the US Congress in human rights matters in foreign policy, the position of Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs was created in the State Department on April 21, 1975 . Under the International Security Assistance and Arms Export Control Act of 1976 of June 30, 1976, the appointment of the coordinator was subject to the US President after prior consultation and resolution in the US Senate . At the same time, the official title was changed to Coordinator for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs .

The Foreign Relations Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1978 of August 17, 1977 changed the official title of Coordinator to Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs and an administrative decree of August 27 , 1977 . October 1977 the establishment of a sub-department for human rights and humanitarian affairs (Bureau of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs) ordered. The Foreign Relations Act for the 1994 and 1995 Financial Years of May 12, 1994 finally approved the appointment of the current Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor . The Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor is head of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor of the State Department and reports to the Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights (department head), to which he is also obliged to report.
