Elliott Abrams (born January 24, 1948 ) is an American lawyer , author and diplomat who served as Republican in foreign policy positions for the US Presidents Ronald Reagan , George HW Bush , George W. Bush and Donald Trump . Abrams is considered a neoconservative and a protégé of billionaire Sheldon Adelson .

Life

His political career began as a speaker for congressmen and senators - as such he tried at times to influence the Democrats Henry "Scoop" Jackson and Patrick Moynihan , who temporarily sidelined him as negotiator for Micronesia - but he was given "human rights" under Ronald Reagan “And the Central America policy and rose under George Bush Sr. to the special envoy of the president and a member of the national security council . In this position he became an advocate of the far-right putschist Efraín Ríos Montt and other dictators in Central America, including Montt's successor in office Marco Vinicio Cerezo Arévalo , and of what they saw as an anti-communist war: torture , disappearances , rape , mass shooting and displacement .

Elliot Abrams was involved in the Iran-Contra affair in various ways - in his capacity as head of department in the State Department - and pleaded guilty for it. He was sentenced to two years probation and one hundred hours of community service for misleading Congress and lost his license to practice law in Washington DC. In 1992 he was pardoned by George HW Bush .

Under George HW Bush, Abrams was the United States' Deputy National Security Advisor . Within the party, Abrams was initially noticed as a critic of Donald Trump, but was then involved by him. During the coup attempt by Juan Guaidó in Venezuela at the end of January 2019 he was appointed by Mike Pompeo as the US special envoy for the "restoration of democracy in Venezuela " on January 25, 2019 in order to implement the "regime change" in Venezuela in accordance with the US Support government. According to the Guardian , Abrams was aware of the Venezuelan attempted coup against Hugo Chavez in 2002.

He was a senior fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations think tank until 2019 and was a board member of the National Endowment for Democracy think tank from 2014 to 2019 .

Elliot Abrams was married to Rachel Abrams (died 2013), daughter of Midge Decter and stepdaughter of Norman Podhoretz . He is of Jewish origin and is involved in politically conservative Jewish organizations.
