Live and act

Assaf is the son of Marie-José Florensa, who comes from Catalonia , and Nabil Assaf, a doctor of Lebanese origin. He graduated from the Master -Studies of economics at the University of Montpellier . Already during his student days he was active as a trade unionist and political activist. He also received the Diplôme d'études approfondies in political science .

After completing his studies, he worked with Georges Frêche . In 1995 Assaf first became project manager for youth and economic development in the town hall of Montpellier , run by Frêche , in 1997 Assaf followed him as a parliamentary employee in the national assembly and in 2000 rose to its head of cabinet. With a brief interruption in 2002, he held this position until 2007. In 2004 he was the campaign leader of the list led by Frêche in the regional elections in Montpellier, which received 49.47 percent of the vote in the first ballot and subsequently appointed Frêche as the mayor. In 2007, Assaf separated from the then regional president Frêche because of his racist remarks, who was therefore excluded from the PS.

Assaf then went into the private sector for two years. At Compagnie d'aménagement du Bas-Rhône et du Languedoc , he was responsible for the public water supply. In 2009 he returned to politics as an advisor and later head of cabinet to the then mayor Hélène Mandroux , and in 2010 Assaf was her campaign manager for the regional elections.

In the parliamentary elections in 2012 , Assaf ran for the eighth constituency of Hérault as a candidate for the PS and was elected to the National Assembly with 55.24 percent of the valid votes in the runoff election against Arnaud Julien. On January 20, 2013, Assaf caused a sensation in a parliamentary debate on the introduction of same-sex marriage with the statement “The time of the pink triangle is over!” (French original: “Le temps du triangle rose est terminé!”) . In this way he spoke out against discrimination against homosexuals if they were denied a civil marriage. For the comparison he made with the labeling of concentration camp prisoners at the time of the Third Reich , Assaf also received sharp criticism from the Union pour un mouvement populaire , which condemned his statement as "unacceptable" and accused him of exploiting "fears and prejudices". As a member of the National Assembly, he also participated in committees on social affairs, sustainable development and spatial planning and constitutional law.

In March 2014 Assaf ran in the regional elections in Montpellier on the 17th list position for the Union de la Gauche list by Jean-Pierre Moure. This received 25.27 percent of the votes, but due to the list-internal ranking he missed the entry into the municipal council. In April 2014 Assaf was one of 41 MPs who abstained from the vote on the stability pact introduced by Manuel Valls in protest against the government's planned austerity program .

In the run-up to the 2017 presidential election , he was appointed thematic head for “Asylum and Integration” in the election campaign of Benoît Hamon , the PS candidate.

In the 2017 parliamentary elections , Assaf refused to run again and resigned from the National Assembly on June 20, 2017.
