William Warren "Bill" Bradley (born July 28, 1943 in Crystal City , Missouri ) is an American politician and former basketball player .
For the Democratic Party , he was a member of the US Senate from 1979 to 1997 as a representative of the state of New Jersey . As a basketball player he was active in the North American professional league NBA for the New York Knicks between 1967 and 1977 .
career
Basketball career
As an outstanding high school athlete, Bradley received over 70 offers for athletic scholarships , including from Kentucky's Adolph Rupp . Since Bradley placed more emphasis on his education than on sports, he decided in 1961 to study at Princeton University at his own expense.
As the outstanding player of the Ivy League , Bradley was voted three times for the All-American team ('63 to '65) and once for Player of the Year (1965). At the Olympia '64 he won the gold medal with the USA team.
Before the regular draft of 1965, the New York Knicks pulled him as a so-called " Territorial Pick, " but Bradley did not immediately opt for a career as a professional athlete. As a winner of a Rhodes Scholarship at Worcester College at the University of Oxford , he studied in England until 1967. In the meantime he played basketball in Italy for Olimpia Milano .
In 1967 he finally moved to the NBA. An important part of an extraordinary Knicks team with Willis Reed , Walt Frazier and Dave DeBusschere , he won the NBA championship in 1970, and another in 1973. He ended his basketball career in 1977 after ten years with the Knicks. In 1983 Bradley was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
politics
Bradley chose a career in politics and became a U.S. Senator for New Jersey State in 1979 , which he remained until 1997. As a popular politician, he was considered a possible presidential candidate in 1988, but did not make a decision until 2000 and lost in the primaries to Vice President Al Gore .
Others
Bradley is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1996) and the American Philosophical Society (since 1997).
At the beginning of 2008 he was one of a group of 105 basketball players who were nominated by the EuroLeague in order to be able to determine fifty important personalities in the sport of basketball in Europe and to honor them in May 2008 in Madrid (Spain). All the nominated players played a particularly prominent role in the European Cup competitions of FIBA Europe and the EuroLeague and were each one of the particularly prominent "stars" of their national league teams.
