Matthias Pape Memorial Tournament

The Matthias Pape Memorial Tournament is a renowned indoor soccer tournament for C juniors. In addition to the host 1. FC Magdeburg and two qualifiers from Magdeburg and the surrounding area, around 15 C youth teams from Bundesliga clubs and teams from abroad will be competing.

Matthias Pape

Matthias Pape (* 1971 in Magdeburg , † May 4, 2001, ibid.) Was a football player and coach. He started in the youth teams of TuS 1860 Magdeburg-Neustadt , switched to BSG Stahl Blankenburg at the age of 17 , where he first played for a year in the A-youth team and was then able to assert himself in the first team. After moving to the then second division team Stahl Thale , he was seriously injured in training and was diagnosed with a serious illness, so that he had to end his career early.

Pape then played for the Magdeburg clubs USC and Fortuna Unterklassig, with the latter he was the first coach. In 1996 he was initially drawn to 1. FC Magdeburg as a B youth coach. A little later he took over the A-youth. He could his greatest success in 1999 to celebrate: After victories against Holstein Kiel , VfB Leipzig , Energie Cottbus and Hannover 96 he could with his charges a 6: 1 victory against 1. FC Saarbrücken celebrate and the DFB Junior Club Cup win . On the Magdeburg side, the later Bundesliga players Maik Franz and Benjamin Schüßler played along with eight players who made it into the first men's team of the FCM.

Pape was known for his good contact with the fans and that, in addition to his football training, he also made sure that his players were successful at school and professionally. As a teenager, he had good contact with his C-youth trainer, who among other things came to his youth consecration.

Matthias Pape succumbed to his illness in 2001 at the age of 29.

The game is currently played with 20 teams, including 15 directly invited teams from the Bundesliga as well as Cambridge United from England and Vejle BK from Denmark. In addition to 1. FC Magdeburg, two clubs from Magdeburg and the surrounding area are also competing. These qualify through a preliminary tournament in which 10 clubs are currently (2015) participating. These are divided into two groups. The first two qualify for two finals, with the 2nd playing against the 1st from the other group. The winners have qualified for the Pape Cup.

In the Pape Cup, the two qualifiers are divided into two groups, the rest of the teams are assigned to one group by lottery. Everyone in the group is played against everyone. The last of each group qualifies for the games for places 17 to 20, which are then played out in the semi-finals and finals. The 3rd and 4th qualify for the games for places 9 to 16, the first two qualify for the games for places 1 to 8. After that, the places are allocated by quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals until each Team could win a single place.

FC Nürnberg, Eintracht Frankfurt, FSV Frankfurt, Greuther Fürth, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Eintracht Braunschweig, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Cambridge United, Vejle BK, Post SV Magdeburg and SV Fortuna Magdeburg.

Since the best youth teams in Germany take part regularly, many later national and Bundesliga players have already played at the tournament. a. Mario Götze , Marco Reus , Toni Kroos , Julian Draxler , Marcel Schmelzer , Jérôme Boateng and Marc-André ter Stegen .

patronage

The tournament takes place under the patronage of changing people. In 2015, DFB sporting director Hansi Flick was the patron, previously it was Franz Beckenbauer , Oliver Bierhoff , Matthias Sammer and Frank Engel .

Venue and spectators

The tournament is currently taking place in the GETEC Arena . The audience record was set in 2015 when around 3,500 spectators appeared. In the same year there was also a live stream over the Internet for the first time, which temporarily collapsed due to the high level of access. The tournament will also be commented live on social networks.

The largest group of spectators sympathizes with 1. FC Magdeburg. Several hundred people from Magdeburg's ultra scene ( Block U ) appear regularly at the tournament and show various choreographies.

Awards

At the Papecup, three awards are given to individual players: best player, best goalkeeper and best goalscorer. The first two are chosen by the coaches of all teams; the top goalscorer is the one who scored the most goals in the entire tournament other than the qualifying tournament.
