Maik Franz (born August 5, 1981 in Merseburg ) is a German sports official and former soccer player .

Career

society

youth

Maik Franz grew up in Langenstein near Halberstadt and began his career at SV Langenstein / Harz. From there he moved to VfB Germania Halberstadt in 1997 , before joining the youth department of 1. FC Magdeburg in the summer of 1998 . With the club's A youth team, he won the DFB Junior Club Cup in 1999 .

Beginnings in Magdeburg and Wolfsburg

Franz played in the defense of 1. FC Magdeburg until 2001 and then moved to VfL Wolfsburg . Franz distinguished himself there by his strength in duels. He won 63 percent of his tackles and was Wolfsburg's best player in this regard. He played 90 Bundesliga games for VfL and scored two goals.

Between 1st and 2nd Bundesliga

In July 2006, Franz moved to the then second division club Karlsruher SC . He formed the central defense with the Swiss Mario Eggimann and played an important role in the Karlsruhe promotion team with his first division experience. After a successful start to the 2007/08 season , both personally and as a team , Franz prematurely extended his contract term with KSC until 2011. From the 2008/09 season he wore the captain's armband . After the relegation of KSC, Franz moved to Eintracht Frankfurt for the 2009/10 season . He signed a four-year contract with Hessen that was only valid for the Bundesliga. At the end of the 2010/11 season he was relegated to Eintracht.

After not being able to agree on a new contract for the second division, Franz left Frankfurt at the end of the season and switched to Hertha BSC . After seven Bundesliga games in the 2011/12 season, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in December 2011 . Without another season appearance after this injury, he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga for the third time in his career with Hertha at the end of this season. He played nine games in the 2012/13 second division season and was promoted back to the Bundesliga with Hertha. After he was not used in the 2013/14 season , Franz was transferred to Hertha BSC's second team, which played in the Regionalliga Nordost , on February 6, 2014 . On May 9, 2014, his contract was terminated.

On January 15, 2015, he ended his career as a professional footballer due to persistent knee problems.

National team

On February 12, 2002, Franz played his first of 19 U-21 internationals against Northern Ireland . He took part with the U-21 national team at the U-21 European Championship in Germany in 2004 , where he played his only game against Sweden. Franz also played once in the 2006 team in 2002 .

Style of play

In the 2007/08 season , Franz was publicly criticized for his style of play. This is characterized too much by hard work and provocations from the opposing players. The criticism culminated in February 2008 after the game VfB Stuttgart against Karlsruher SC by Mario Gómez , who insulted Franz after the game. Gómez revised his choice of words in retrospect, but stuck to his criticism. As a result, public criticism and support for Franz (supporters of Karlsruher SC called him “Iron Maik”) intensified. When the reporting ended, the discussion subsided again after a few weeks.

In April 2011, the Bremen player Torsten Frings and his coach Thomas Schaaf criticized Franz's style of play after he had hit the player Denni Avdic with his elbow in the face in a header duel . Because of his style of play, Franz was often warned with the yellow card - in the 2009/10 season he donated 500 euros to a good cause for each of his eleven yellow cards. In the 2010/11 season he received 13 yellow cards in 23 games.

Functionary career

Since the beginning of 2016, Franz has been supporting 1. FC Magdeburg as an assistant to the management in the field of sports as part of his dual studies in "Sports Management" . In May 2018 he took over the management of the club's licensed players department.

TV career

In March 2015, Franz took over the series of reports “Iron Maik - Sport at the Limit” as part of the “Inside Report” program on the private broadcaster Sky .
