52nd United States Congress

The 52nd Congress of the United States , composed of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative period lasted from March 4, 1891 to March 4, 1893. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class III ) were elected in the 1890 congressional elections. This resulted in different majorities in the chambers. The Republican Party achieved a majority in the Senate, including Benjamin Harrison as president. In contrast, there was a majority in the House of Representatives for the Democratic Party . The congress met in the American capital Washington, DC At that time the United States consisted of 44 states. The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1880 census .
