52nd United States Congress
The 52nd Congress of the United States , composed of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative period lasted from March 4, 1891 to March 4, 1893. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class III ) were elected in the 1890 congressional elections. This resulted in different majorities in the chambers. The Republican Party achieved a majority in the Senate, including Benjamin Harrison as president. In contrast, there was a majority in the House of Representatives for the Democratic Party . The congress met in the American capital Washington, DC At that time the United States consisted of 44 states. The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1880 census .

- March 4, 1891: beginning of the legislative period of the 52nd Congress
- March 14, 1891: In New Orleans , a lynch mob storms a prison and murders 11 Italians who had previously been acquitted of murder charges for killing a police chief.
- April 1, 1891: Founding of the Wrigley Company in Chicago .
- May 5, 1891: Opening of the Music Hall in New York City, later known as Carnegie Hall . The guest conductor is the composer Tchaikovsky .
- May 20, 1891: The kinetoscope is demonstrated for the first time in Thomas Alva Edison's laboratory .
- October 1, 1891: Stanford University in California opens.
- November 11, 1891: The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is founded in St. Louis .
- January 1, 1892: Operations begin on Ellis Island as a central collection point for immigrants.
- November 8, 1892: US presidential and congressional elections. The Democrat and former President Grover Cleveland prevails against the incumbent Benjamin Harrison and becomes US President again. He takes office on March 4, 1893. In the congressional elections, the Democrats secure a majority in both chambers.
- January 17, 1893: The United States Marine Corps lands in Hawaii
