George Washington Shonk

George Washington Shonk (born April 26, 1850 in Plymouth , Luzerne County , Pennsylvania , †  August 14, 1900 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Shonk attended his homeland public schools and Wyoming Seminary in Kingston . He then studied until 1873 at Wesleyan University in Middletown ( Connecticut ). After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1876, he began to work in Wilkes-Barre in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1890 Shonk was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the twelfth constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Edwin Sylvanus Osborne on March 4, 1891 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1892, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1893 . After his time in the US House of Representatives Shonk practiced again as a lawyer in Wilkes-Barre. He also got into the coal mining business in Pennsylvania. He died on August 14, 1900 while on a business trip in the federal capital Washington and was buried in his birthplace, Plymouth.
