William Henry Hines, 1892

William Henry Hines (born March 15, 1856 in New York City , †  January 17, 1914 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Hines attended public schools in his home country and then Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pennsylvania. In 1865 he and his parents had moved from their New York homeland to near Wilkes-Barre. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1881, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1879 and 1884 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania on several occasions ; from 1888 to 1892 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the congressional elections of 1892 Hines was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the twelfth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican George Washington Shonk on March 4, 1893 . Since he was not confirmed in 1894, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1895 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, William Hines practiced law again. He died on January 17, 1914 in Wilkes-Barre.
