Alfred C. Harmer

Alfred Crout Harmer (born August 8, 1825 in Germantown , Pennsylvania , †  March 6, 1900 there ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 and again from 1877 to 1900 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alfred Harmer was born on August 8, 1825 in Germantown, now a part of Philadelphia . He attended public schools in his home country and the Germantown Academy . Then he worked as a shoemaker. Later he also worked in trade. Harmer was also involved in the railroad business and coal trading. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1856 and 1860 he was a member of the Philadelphia City Council; and from 1860 to 1863 he was a registrar there as Recorder of Deeds .

In the congressional elections of 1870 Harmer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Caleb Newbold Taylor on March 4, 1871 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1875 . In 1874 he was defeated by the Democrat John Robbins . In the elections of 1876 Harmer was re-elected to Congress in the fifth district of his state, where he replaced Robbins on March 4, 1877. After eleven re-elections, he could remain in the US House of Representatives until his death on March 6, 1900. During this time, the Spanish-American War of 1898 took place .
