Caleb Newbold Taylor (born July 27, 1813 in Newportville , Bucks County , Pennsylvania , †  November 15, 1887 there ) was an American politician . Between 1867 and 1871 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

Caleb Taylor attended public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . In the years 1848, 1850 and 1852 he ran unsuccessfully for the Congress . After the dissolution of the Whigs, he joined the Republican Party, founded in 1854 . In May 1860, he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago , at which Abraham Lincoln was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the congressional elections of 1866 Taylor was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Martin Russell Thayer on March 4, 1867 . Since he lost to the Democrat John Roberts Reading in 1868 , he was initially only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1869 . This period was marked by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly failed impeachment trial. Caleb Taylor appealed against the outcome of the 1868 election. When this was granted, he was able to oust John Reading from Congress on April 13, 1870 and take his old seat again. By March 3, 1871, he ended the legislative period that had begun there.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Taylor also got involved in banking. From 1875 until his death he was President of the Farmers' National Bank of Bucks County , based in Bristol . He died on November 15, 1887 on his Sunbury Farm near Newportville.
