John Roberts Reading

John Roberts Reading (born November 1, 1826 in Somerton , Pennsylvania , †  February 14, 1886 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . In 1869 and 1870 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Reading attended the public schools of his home country and then studied medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia until 1847 . After becoming a doctor, he began practicing this profession in Somerton. He later graduated from Hahnemann College , also in Philadelphia, where he studied homeopathy. Then he also worked in this branch. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1868 Reading was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Caleb Newbold Taylor , whom he had defeated in the election, on March 4, 1869 . Taylor appealed against the election result. When this was complied with, Reading had to resign his mandate in Congress on April 13, 1870 back to Taylor.

In 1870 Reading sought unsuccessfully to return to Congress. After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died in Philadelphia on February 14, 1886.
