Halbert S. Greenleaf

Halbert Stevens Greenleaf (born April 12, 1827 in Guilford , Vermont , †  August 25, 1906 in Greece , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 and again from 1891 to 1893 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Halbert Greenleaf attended public schools in his home country and then received an academic education. He later moved to Shelburne Falls , Massachusetts , where he made door locks. In this context he founded the company Yale & Greenleaf Lock Co. In 1856 he was also a justice of the peace there. A year later he was a captain in the Massachusetts State Militia. From 1862 he served first as a captain and then as a colonel in the Union's army during the civil war . He then worked for a few years in a salt works near New Orleans , Louisiana . From 1867 he lived in Rochester, New York State, where he again made door locks.

Politically, Greenleaf joined the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 30th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Republican John Van Voorhis on March 4, 1883 . Since he was not confirmed in 1884, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1885 . In the elections of 1890 Greenleaf was re-elected to Congress in the 30th district of his state, where he replaced the Republican Charles S. Baker on March 4, 1891 , who had succeeded him in 1885. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1892, he could only spend one term in Congress until March 3, 1893.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Halbert Greenleaf resumed his previous activities. In 1896 he retired. He died on August 25, 1906 in his summer home in Greece near Charlotte .
