John Van Voorhis

John Van Voorhis (born October 22, 1826 in Decatur , Otsego County , New York , †  October 20, 1905 in Rochester , New York) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1883 and again from 1893 to 1895 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Van Voorhis enjoyed an academic education. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1851, he began to work in this profession in Elmira . In 1857 he became a member of the local education committee; In 1859 he became the city's legal representative. Between September 1862 and March 1863 he headed the 28th financial district of his state. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In June 1864 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Baltimore , at which President Abraham Lincoln was nominated for re-election.

In the congressional elections of 1878 Van Voorhis was elected in the 30th  constituency of New York in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded the Democrat Elizur K. Hart on March 4, 1879 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 . From 1881 he was chairman of the mining committee. In 1882 he was not re-elected.

After the temporary end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Van Voorhis practiced as a lawyer in Rochester. In the elections of 1892 he was re-elected to Congress in the 31st district of his state, where he could spend another legislative period between March 4, 1893 and March 3, 1895. In 1894 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After his final departure from Congress, he returned to practice as a lawyer. John Van Voorhis died on October 20, 1905 in Rochester, where he was also buried.
