Francis B. Brewer

Francis Beattie Brewer (born October 8, 1820 in Keene , New Hampshire , †  July 29, 1892 in Westfield , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Francis Brewer attended both Barnet public schools and Newberry Seminary , both in Vermont . He also graduated from the Kimball Union Academy in Meriden and then in 1843 Dartmouth College in Hanover . After a subsequent medical degree, also at Dartmouth College , and his license as a doctor in 1846, he began to practice in this profession, which he practiced between 1849 and 1861 in various cities in Vermont, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania . In Titusville, Pennsylvania, he got into the oil and wood business. In 1861 he moved to Westfield, New York, where he worked in banking, crafts and agriculture. During the Civil War he was a major state military agent .

After the war, Brewer embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1868 and 1879 he was a member of the district council in Chautauqua County ; in June 1872 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia , on which President Ulysses S. Grant was nominated for re-election. Brewer was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1873 and 1874 . For four years he was the director of the federal government for the Union Pacific Railroad . In 1881 he took over the management of the state mental hospital in Buffalo .

In the 1882 congressional election , Brewer was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 33rd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Henry Van Aernam on March 4, 1883 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1884, he could only complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1885 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Brewer returned to work as a doctor. He died in Westfield on July 29, 1892.
