Marian Williams Clarke (born July 29, 1880 in Bradford County , Pennsylvania , †  April 8, 1953 in Cooperstown , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1935 she represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1881, Marian Williams moved with her parents to Cheyenne , Wyoming Territory . She attended the public schools in her new home and studied for a year at the University of Nebraska Art Academy in Lincoln . In 1902 she graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs . Between 1881 and 1918 she lived in seven states. In 1918 she moved to Delaware County , New York, where she settled on a farm. She married the politician John D. Clarke .

After the death of her husband, who died as a congressman, Marian Clarke was elected as the Republican Party candidate in the by-election for the 34th seat of New York as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she was elected on May 28. December 1933 took up her new mandate. In 1934 she toyed with the idea of ​​another candidacy. However, they withdrew them before the primaries began. Therefore, until January 3, 1935, she could only serve one term in Congress . During this time, the first New Deal laws of the Roosevelt government were passed, which their party was rather hostile to. In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd.

After the end of her time in the US House of Representatives, Marian Clarke retired to her farm Arbor Hill near Delhi until 1950 . She died in Cooperstown on April 8, 1953.
