Donald Jerome Mitchell (born May 8, 1923 in Ilion , Herkimer County , New York , †  September 27, 2003 in Little Falls , New York) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 1983 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Donald Mitchell attended public schools in his home country. During World War II he was a fighter pilot in the United States Navy between 1942 and 1946 . After the war he continued his education at Hobart College until 1947 . This was followed by studies at Columbia University in New York City until 1949 . He graduated from University's Teachers College , also in New York City, in 1950 . During the Korean War he was a flight instructor from 1951 to 1953. Then he worked as an optician. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1954 and 1956 he sat on the council of the city of Herkimer ; from 1956 to 1959 he was mayor there. Between 1965 and 1972 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . In his home country he was a member of numerous charities.

In the 1972 congressional election , Mitchell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 31st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Robert C. McEwen on January 3, 1973 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . During this time, the end of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement as well as the Watergate affair fell .

In 1982 Donald Mitchell renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked again as an optician. He died of Parkinson's disease on September 27, 2003 in Little Falls .
