Bernard William Kearney (born May 23, 1889 in Ithaca , New York , †  June 3, 1976 in Venice , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1959 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bernard Kearney attended his home public schools and Schenectady High School . After studying law at Union University Albany Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1914, he began working in this profession. Since 1909 he was a member of the national guard of his state. In 1916 and 1917 he was stationed on the border there with Mexico during a border conflict . Between 1917 and 1919 he served in various functions in the American armed forces during the First World War in France . For his military services he was later awarded the French Legion of Honor and the Croix de guerre .

Kearney remained a member of the New York National Guard until 1940, where he rose to major general . His main occupation was a lawyer. Between 1920 and 1924 he was a municipal judge in Gloversville ; from 1924 to 1929 he served as the assistant district attorney in Hamilton County . He then did the same job between 1929 and 1931 in Fulton County . In this district he worked as a district attorney from 1931 to 1942. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1942 congressional elections , Kearney was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 30th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Frank Crowther on January 3, 1943 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1959 . From 1943 to 1945 he represented the 30th, then until 1953 the 31st and finally the 32nd district of his state. During his time in Congress, the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the beginning of the civil rights movement .

Kearney was instrumental in creating the GI Bill of Rights . In 1958 he renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer in Canandaigua . He died in Venice on June 3, 1976 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
