Lewis Selye

Lewis Selye (born July 11, 1803 in Chittenango , New York , † January 27, 1883 in Rochester , New York) was an American politician . Between 1867 and 1869 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lewis Selye attended community schools. He did an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. In 1824 he moved to Rochester, where he went about the manufacture of iron. He served several terms on the Monroe County County Council . In 1841 he was elected Alderman . He served on the Common Council in 1843, 1856, and 1871 . Between 1848 and 1851 and 1854 he was County Treasurer in Monroe County.

In the 1866 congressional elections for the 40th Congress , Selye was elected as an independent Republican in the 28th  constituency of New York in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Roswell Hart on March 4, 1867 . He retired from the after March 3, 1869 Congress of.

In 1868 he founded the Rochester Daily Chronicle , which merged in 1870 with the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle . He was a trustee of the Monroe County Savings Bank . He died on January 27, 1883 in Rochester. His body was then interred in Mount Hope Cemetery .
