E. Harold Cluett

Ernest Harold Cluett (born July 13, 1874 in Troy , New York , †  February 4, 1954 there ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1943 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harold Cluett attended public schools in his home country. In 1892 he graduated from the Albany Academy ; then he studied until 1896 at Williams College in Williamstown ( Massachusetts ). He was also enrolled at the University of Oxford in England . Between 1900 and 1916 Cluett worked as CFO for the company Cluett, Peabody & Co . Afterwards he was its vice-president from 1916 to 1929 and its chairman until 1937. In 1918 he also headed the personnel department of the Watervliet Government Arsenal ; during the First World War he was also a member of theNational War Work Council .

Politically, Cluett became a member of the Republican Party . In 1934 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate . In the congressional elections of 1936 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded the late William D. Thomas on January 3, 1937 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1943 . The Roosevelt government's last New Deal laws were passed there by 1941 . Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II .

In 1942, Harold Cluett renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew into retirement, which he in Palm Beach ( Florida spent). He died on February 4, 1954 in Troy, the city of his birth, where he was buried.
