Roswell Hart

Roswell Hart (born August 4, 1824 in Rochester , New York , † April 20, 1883 there ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Roswell Hart completed his preparatory studies. In 1843 he graduated from Yale College in New Haven ( Connecticut ). He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1847. At that time the Mexican-American War was raging . Hart went about trading. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1864 for the 39th Congress , Hart was elected in the 28th  constituency of New York to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Freeman Clarke on March 4, 1865 . He suffered a defeat in his renewed candidacy in 1866 and then left the Congress after March 3, 1867 .

Between 1869 and 1876 he was superintendent of the Railway Mail Service for New York and Pennsylvania . He died in Rochester on April 20, 1883 and was then buried in Mount Hope Cemetery .
