William Williams (politician, 1815)

William Williams (born September 6, 1815 in Bolton , Tolland County , Connecticut , †  September 10, 1876 in Buffalo , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Williams received a general school education. Then he started to work in the banking industry. First he was in Windham and then in 1838 in Sandusky ( Ohio ) in this profession. Since 1839 he had the same occupation in Buffalo. He also got into the railroad business and became manager and president of a railroad company. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1866 and 1867 .

In the 1870 congressional election , Williams was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 30th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Republican David S. Bennett on March 4, 1871 . Since he was not confirmed in 1872, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1873 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Williams retired. He died on September 10, 1876 in Buffalo, where he was also buried.
