John Arnot

John Arnot Jr. (born March 11, 1831 in Elmira , New York , †  November 20, 1886 there ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1886 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Arnot attended private schools in his home country. He later enrolled at Yale College , but left that institution prematurely and without a degree. After the death of his father, he went into banking in Elmira. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1859 and 1864 he was mayor of Elmira. During the civil war , as a major in Elmira, Arnot was paymaster of the Union troops stationed there . After Elmira was officially promoted to town, he was elected mayor there in 1864, 1870 and 1874.

In the congressional election of 1882 , Arnot was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Republican David P. Richardson on March 4, 1883 . After a re-election in the 28th district of his state, he was able to exercise his mandate until his death on November 20, 1886.
