Elias B. Holmes

Elias Bellows Holmes (born May 22, 1807 in Fletcher , Vermont , † July 31, 1866 in Brockport , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1845 and 1849 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elias Bellows Holmes was born in Franklin County about five years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended district schools and the St. Albans Academy . Then he taught at a school. He studied law in Pittsford . He was admitted to the bar in 1830. He then moved to Brockport in 1831, where he practiced as a lawyer. In addition, he pursued agricultural activities. He also worked in the transport sector. Between 1840 and 1855 he worked on canal parcel ships between Rochester and Buffalo . He was one of the sponsors and builders of the Rochester & Niagara Falls Railroad . Until the merger with the New York Central Railroad, he held the post of director there. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .

In the congressional election of 1844 for the 29th Congress , Holmes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Timothy Childs on March 4, 1845 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1848 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1849 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he resumed his agricultural activities. He died in Brockport about a year after the Civil War ended . His body was then buried in the city cemetery.
