David S. Bennett

David Smith Bennett (born May 3, 1811 in Onondaga County , New York , †  November 6, 1894 in Buffalo , New York) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

David Bennett was born on a farm near Camillus , Onondaga County. He attended the public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. He later moved to the cities of Syracuse , New York, and in 1853 to Buffalo, where he sold agricultural products. He also ran some granaries. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1865 he entered the New York Senate .

In the 1868 congressional election , Bennett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 30th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Democrat James M. Humphrey on March 4, 1869 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1870, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1871 . During this time the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, David Bennett resumed his previous activities. He died in Buffalo on November 6, 1895 and was buried in Syracuse.
