Ira Davenport (politician)

Ira Davenport (born June 28, 1841 in Hornellsville , Steuben County , New York , †  October 6, 1904 in Bath , New York) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1847, Ira Davenport came to Bath with his father, where he later attended the local Haverling Academy . He also graduated from the Russell Collegiate School in New Haven ( Connecticut ). After his father's death in 1868, he took over the management of his large estates and other business connections. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1878 and 1881 he was a member of the New York Senate ; from 1881 to 1883 he was a State Comptroller in the state government. In 1885 he ran unsuccessfully for governor from New York.

In the congressional election of 1884 Davenport was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 29th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded the Democrat John Arnot, who had moved to the 28th district, on March 4, 1885 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1889 . In 1888, Ira Davenport renounced another candidacy. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew into retirement. He died on October 6, 1904 in Bath and was buried in the family cemetery there on his Riverside estate .
