Career

Nothing is known about Thomas Sanzillo's youth. During the 1970s and 1980s, Sanzillo worked as a social worker with a focus on housing, welfare and development issues in low-income communities in Westchester County . He began his political career as an intern in the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, where he worked in 1975 and 1976. From 1983 to 1990 he was a project leader in the New York State Department of Social Services, responsible for funding and housing provision for the low-income and homeless in the state. He then worked as the Assistant Comptroller for Policy Management in the New York City Comptrollers Authority . In 1994 he moved to the New York State Comptrollers Carl McCall . He was appointed First Deputy Comptroller by Alan Hevesi in 2003 . After Hevesi's resignation, he served as the Acting New York State Comptroller from December 22, 2006 to February 7, 2007.

As Acting Comptroller, he refused in his last days in office to pay an invoice to the Comptroller's office by the former Governor of New York George Pataki . It was about the use of a private jet for a flight to Virginia to inspect the steel for the construction of the Freedom Tower in Ground Zero . Sanzillo previously told Pataki that he could use a state plane for the trip to Virginia. The bill was therefore sent back to the governor's office. The governor of New York Eliot Spitzer then decided to send them to Pataki so that his campaign committee would pay them.

Sanzillo acted as Acting Comptroller until Thomas DiNapoli was elected as the new New York State Comptroller by the New York State Legislature . On March 7, 2007, DiNapoli reappointed Sanzillo as First Deputy Comptroller. On July 26, 2007, Sanzillo resigned from his post as First Deputy Comptroller. He now serves as a financial advisor with TR Rose and Associates in New York City.
