Staley Nichols Clarke (born May 24, 1794 in Prince George's County , Maryland , †  October 14, 1860 in Ellicottville , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1841 and 1843 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Staley Clarke was the younger brother of Congressman Archibald S. Clarke (1788-1821). In 1815 he moved to Buffalo, New York State. He then worked as an employee at the Bank of Niagara and from 1819 to 1822 at Holland Land Co. in Batavia . He was then transferred to Ellicottville by this company as their representative. For 17 years he held the office of treasurer in the local Cattaraugus County . Politically, he joined the Whig Party .

In the 1840 congressional election , Clarke was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 31st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Richard P. Marvin on March 4, 1841 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1842, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1843 . That period was fraught with tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs. In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Staley Clarke no longer appeared politically. He died in Ellicottville on October 14, 1860.
