Charles F. Mitchell

Charles Franklin Mitchell (born February 18, 1806 in Bucks County , Pennsylvania , †  September 27, 1865 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Mitchell attended public schools in his home in Pennsylvania. In 1829 he moved to Lockport, New York State. There he worked, among other things, as a fireman or stoker. From 1835 he worked in the milling business. Politically, Mitchell joined the Whig Party , founded in the 1830s . In the congressional elections of 1836 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 33rd  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Gideon Hard on March 4, 1837 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1841 .

Towards the end of his tenure, he came into conflict with the law for fraud. In 1841, he was sentenced to a prison term, which he served in Sing-Sing Prison . He was later pardoned for health reasons. He died in Cincinnati on September 27, 1865.
