John M. Farquhar

John McCreath Farquhar (born April 17, 1832 in Ayr , Scotland , †  April 24, 1918 in Buffalo , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1891 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Farquhar attended the Ayr Academy and then came to Buffalo, New York, as a teenager. For 33 years he then worked in the newspaper industry as a printer, editor and publisher. From 1860 to 1862 he was President of the International Typographical Union . He then took part in the American Civil War in various functions in the Union Army . He rose to major. For his military achievements he was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor . After the war, he returned to Buffalo, where he resumed his previous activities. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1884 Farquhar was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 32nd  electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Democrat William Findlay Rogers on March 4, 1885 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1891 . From 1891 he was chairman of the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries .

In 1890, John Farquhar renounced another congressional candidacy. From 1898 to 1902 he was a member of the United States Industrial Commission . After that, he retired. He died on April 24, 1918 in Buffalo, where he was also buried.
