Porter Sheldon

Porter Sheldon (born September 29, 1831 in Victor , Ontario County , New York , †  August 15, 1908 in Jamestown , New York) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Porter Sheldon attended preparatory schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1854, he began to work in Randolph in this profession. In 1857 he moved to Rockford , Illinois , where he also practiced as a lawyer. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1861 he took part in a constitutional convention for the state of Illinois. In 1865 he returned to New York, where he settled in Jamestown and worked as a lawyer.

In the congressional election of 1868 Sheldon was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 31st  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Henry Van Aernam on March 4, 1869 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1870, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1871 . During this time the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Porter Sheldon returned to working as a lawyer in Jamestown. He died there on August 15, 1908.
