Elmer Joseph Holland (born January 8, 1894 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , †  August 9, 1968 in Annapolis , Maryland ) was an American politician . In 1942 and 1943 and between 1956 and 1968 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elmer Holland attended public schools in his home country and then Duquesne University , also in Pittsburgh. He then studied at the University of Montpellier in France . During the First World War he was a lieutenant in an artillery unit in the US Army . He was used in France. There he graduated from the Saumur Cavalry School in 1919 . Between 1915 and 1933, with the exception of his time in France (1917–1919), Holland was the sales and advertising manager of a glass company. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1934 to 1942 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . Between 1940 and 1942 he was street and sewer commissioner for the city of Pittsburgh.

After the resignation of MP Joseph A. McArdle , Holland was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the by-election due for the 33rd seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on May 19, 1942. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1942, he could only finish the current legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1943 . This was shaped by the events of the Second World War . During this war he served as a major in the American armed forces. He was used in Europe. Despite his military service, he became a member of the Pennsylvania Senate in 1943 . After a few re-elections, he was able to exercise this mandate until 1956.

After the death of MP Vera Buchanan , Holland won the due by-election in the 30th  constituency of Pennsylvania and assumed his new mandate on January 24, 1956. After five re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on August 9, 1968. From 1963 he represented the 20th district there as the successor to James E. Van Zandt . During this time, events of the Cold War and the civil rights movement as well as the beginning of the Vietnam War took place . Elmer Holland was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
